Meaningful Learning
About
The purpose of this website is to provide information for students in 6th grade and up to adults to help learning to be more meaningful. This website was created by Miller Kids University.
What is meaningful learning?
Meaningful learning has value to the learner. When learning is meaningful, it gives the learner knowledge that can be used and which he or she can identify with.
Meaningful learning should:
-
Center on a student rather than a teacher
-
Involve the learner's input, planning, and development
-
Be through experience and action
-
Relate to real life topics and situations
-
Be relevant to the learner
Stages for meaningful learning:
-
Give a reason for learning it. There must be a purpose for learning about the topic such as it addresses a need, solves a problem, or gives satisfaction.
-
Understand it. There must be an explanation of the topic.
-
Manipulate it. There must be a learning activity around the topic.
-
Remember it. A student must be able to tell about what he or she has learned
-
Apply it. A student must be able to find a use for what he or she has learned.
Ways to make learning meaningful:
-
Link learning to real-life experiences.
-
Use stories or visuals like art, graphics, or videos for learning.
-
Use hands-on activities for learning.
-
Ask questions about what you learn.
-
Reflect on what you learn and how it could help you.
-
Do further research or develop a project about what you learn.
-
Connect what you learn to something that interests you.
-
Connect what you are currently learning to something you have previously learned and already know.
-
Find an application or way to use what you learn.
-
Talk about and share what you learn with others.
